Originally from The Pas, Manitoba, Debra McGinnis moved with her husband to southern Saskatchewan, then to Alberta and currently is living in Edmonton. Throughout her life, she has attended and continues to attend numerous Fine Arts Courses. On June 19, 2003, Debra graduated from the University of Alberta’s Fine Arts Certificate program with distinction. During her education at the U of A, Debra focused on pastel painting, print making, acrylic and mix media. Debra continues to work with mentors and take art courses from varies art instructors, she feels that it’s important to experience new opportunities throughout life whether it be in fine arts, music or travel.

Debra’s first solo show consisted of small natural objects; mushrooms, leaves, bits of bark, rocks, anything found outdoors. “I’ve always looked at objects very closely. I’m fascinated by how more interesting things get when they’re no longer considered beautiful by traditional standards. Working in pastels, theses small objects in a larger format changes the object into a more abstracted piece. It’s recognizable but it recreates the subject”.

Artist Statement

As a really shy and private person, I find it’s easier express my ideas and thoughts through drawing and painting. I want to create a story using color, shape and light. I want you to feel the sun on your face, the smell of pine trees and feel the wind blowing your hair. I hope through my art to have you remember or visualize a place that you have visited or a place you wish to visit. Come with me for a quiet walk through the woods, let’s explore together.
